The basketball hoop sits at exactly 10 feet (3.05m) by accident, not design. In 1891, James Naismith needed a spot for a peach basket at a Springfield YMCA gym, so he used the track's railing — which happened to sit 10 feet up. That accident has been the world standard for 130+ years.
