Self-driving
Vehicle technology that uses sensors and software to perceive its surroundings and make driving decisions without continuous human control. Depending on the automation level, human supervision and intervention may still be required.
The first self-driving vehicle race, hosted by DARPA in 2004, was a disaster. Of 15 entrants, two withdrew before starting and one flipped over at the starting area. Even the best performer stalled after just 11.78 km—under 5% of the 240 km desert course—ending the race with no winner.
