Mew was secretly added to Pokémon Red and Green in the 300 bytes left after debug tools were removed. It was not meant to appear in normal play, but an unforeseen bug made it show up in some players’ games; that led to an official giveaway.
In Pokémon Red and Blue, the old manblocking the road out of Viridian City was passed out drunk in the Japanese original. Western versions changed it to 'grumpy without his morning coffee' — but his sprite still has the original's flushed cheeks.
