Ottoman Empire
The Ottoman Empire arose in Anatolia in the late thirteenth century and ruled territories across southeastern Europe, western Asia, and North Africa. It lasted until the abolition of the sultanate in 1922.
Ottoman Empire Sultan Murad IV (r. 1623–1640) despised smoking so intensely that he executed anyone caught with tobacco, killing roughly 30,000 people. He even patrolled streets in disguise to catch smokers personally.
