Louis Daguerre
A 19th-century French painter and stage designer who invented the daguerreotype, the first commercially practical photographic process.
On August 19, 1839, France released Louis Daguerre's photographic process, the daguerreotype, patent-free to the world. But five days earlier, Daguerre had secured a patent only in Britain through an agent, leaving Britain alone to pay licensing fees.
